OWU Graduate Appointed Director of Literacy Program

October 23, 2000

DELAWARE, OHIO -- AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteer Rita McMillen ('00) has been chosen to serve as director for the Buckeye Valley Reads program for the 2000-2001 school year.

An ongoing partnership between Ohio Wesleyan University and the Buckeye Valley East Elementary School in Ashley, Ohio, the program allows Ohio Wesleyan students to earn work/study pay as reading tutors to second and third grade children. Unpaid volunteers are also accepted.

A native of Canton, Ohio, McMillen majored in geology in addition to a double-minor in psychology and sociology. After her year with AmeriCorps/VISTA, she hopes to teach middle school earth science. Buckeye Valley Reads is also not the first community service or literacy program she has been involved in. During her time at OWU, McMillen participated in The Columbus Initiative, Upward Bound, adult literacy tutoring in Canton, tutoring incarcerated teens at the Scioto/Riverview Corrections Facility, and organizing an America Reads program for children living at a battered women's shelter.

The AmeriCorps/VISTA program is a domestic national service organization first proposed by President Kennedy and later formed during the Johnson administration. Its goal is the elimination of poverty in the United States through volunteer support.
