Bishop Men's Lacrosse Advances to NCAA Division III Quarterfinals

[ Men's Lacrosse Photo ]DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Ohio Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team will visit Nazareth College for an NCAA Division III tournament quarterfinal game, it was announced Wednesday. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m. Monday at Flyer Field on the Nazareth campus in Pittsford, N.Y.

Ohio Wesleyan (14-3) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 13-10 win over Denison on Wednesday. Senior midfielder Dan Stroka (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored a man-up goal off an assist from junior attacker Jason Fogelson (Bridgewater, Conn./Canterbury School) with 4:22 to play to break a 10-10 tie and send the Bishops on their way past Denison in an NCAA Division III tournament first-round game. Sophomore attacker Matt Coughlin (Denver, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and Fogelson added goals in the final minutes for the final margin. Coughlin led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Fogelson, sophomore midfielder Scott Jackson (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and Stroka each contributed 2 goals and 2 assists. Junior midfielder Sean Norris (Scituate, Mass./Boston College) added a goal and 2 assists and sophomore attacker John Galvin (Port Washington, N.Y./Kent School) scored 2 goals. Junior Corey Ayers (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie School) stopped 17 shots in the Bishop goal.

Ohio Wesleyan shared the North Coast Athletic Conference championship, the Battling Bishops' 11th conference title in 16 seasons. Ohio Wesleyan is making its 17th NCAA Division III playoff appearance in 21 seasons and its 22nd overall playoff appearance. The Bishops were ranked No. 10 in the final USILA Division III poll.

Nazareth (12-0) was seeded No. 2 in the NCAA Division III tournament bracket and received a first-round bye. The Golden Flyers are making their 10th consecutive Division III playoff appearance and their 12th overall. Nazareth was ranked second in the final USILA Division III rankings.

This marks the fifth time in 6 seasons that Ohio Wesleyan and Nazareth will meet in the Division III playoffs. The teams met in the semifinals for 4 straight seasons, with the Flyers taking a 14-13 decision in 1995, a 17-11 verdict in 1996, a 16-9 decision in 1997 and a 10-9 squeaker in 1998.

The winner of the Ohio Wesleyan-Nazareth game will advance to the NCAA Division III semifinals against the winner of Sunday's Rochester Institute of Technology-Middlebury game. The Division III championship will be held on Sunday, May 28, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
