OWU Hosts AmeriCorps*VISTA for Third Consecutive Year

May 9, 2000

DELAWARE, OHIO -- For the third year in a row, Ohio Wesleyan University has been selected to host one of the Ohio Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) members.

The VISTA will work in conjunction with Sue Pasters, the Director of Community Service Learning. The VISTA will coordinate the Buckeye Valley Reads program for Buckeye Valley East Elementary School in Ashley, Ohio.

The VISTAs for the past two years have been OWU graduates. OWU is, in fact, encouraged to recruit and hire a member of the OWU "family" to coordinate the program. Currently, no VISTA has been chosen for next year.

The position begins in July 2000, and will last until July 2001. The VISTA is paid a subsistent-level wage, but it is considered more of a domestic Peace Corps position. Upon completion of the program, the VISTA receives an educational award which they can use to pay off debt, use toward graduate school or any other type of educational matters.

Kate Meierhans is the current VISTA. "I've worked with a lot of great people," she said. "The staff at the school have been very supportive and that helps in all aspects." Meierhans' duties include recruiting OWU students and training them to be reading tutors. She also accompanies them to the school and supervises the OWU students as they work with the second and third graders.
