Hawes' quarter-mile run begins at 5:43 p.m. in downtown Columbus (between 2nd and 4th Aves.) on Jan. 2. He was notified of his selection in October, following his nomination for the honor by alumna Molly Kuhlman, a former member of OWU's swim team. Kuhlman is now head swimming coach at the University of Findlay.

Hawes will fly back from his team practice in Ft. Lauderdale to participate in the event, while Kuhlman briefly helps out Caryanne Lutz, assistant OWU swimming coach, with the Bishop swimmers in Florida.

"I'm excited to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," says Hawes.
