This farcical, cartoon-esque take on the fairy tale of The Princess and the Pea, transports its audience through a charming musical that may be a little beyond its time.

Based on the book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer with music by Mary Rogers and lyrics by Marshall Barer, the show marked the beginning of Carol Burnett's rise to stardom and also featured Sarah Jessica Parker in the lead in a later 1996 New York production.

Set in 1428, the story of The Princess and the Pea takes odd twists and turns, interspersed with songs that give the audience a whole new look at the popular fairy tale. Once Upon a Mattress is directed by Professor L.B. Rabby and designed by Professor D. Glen Vanderbilt Jr., and OWU seniors Whitney Woodland and Rebecca Gura. There are 21 cast members in the production including: Stephen Cady '01 as Prince Dauntless; Emily Hill '01 as Winnifred; Emily Fillmore '03 as Queen Aggravain, and Luke Lindberg '02 as King Sextimus. Music is under the direction of Professor Robert Nims.

The show will run March 30-31 and April 6-7 at 8 p.m. and April 8 at 2 p.m. in the Chappelear Drama Center's main theatre. Ticket prices are $5 for students and senior citizens, $6 for faculty and staff and $7 for the general public. Tickets may be reserved one week prior to the opening, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. For ticket reservations and more information, contact the Chappelear Box Office at 740-368-3855.
