Dance Students Go Statewide with 'Senior Tour' Performances

April 30, 2001

DELAWARE, OHIO -- Each spring, Ohio Wesleyan sends its senior dance students on a Senior Tour, where they are given the opportunity to perform original works for audiences throughout Ohio. This year 18 students will showcase six pieces at Fort Hayes High School in Columbus, Cincinnati High School, Rio Grande University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Hathaway Brown School, and Ohio University.

The first individual piece is by Adrienne Barr, which incorporates music, the spoken word, and athletic movements in a highly energetic quintet. A solo performance by Amy Helmstetter features rapid, unpredictable movements set to the music of Duke Ellington. Another solo piece by Deb Rutledge, Roman Confection, focuses on emotional anguish set against the backdrop of ancient Rome. Brianne Schenkel's quintet, Streaming, was influenced by the flow of a waterfall and the music of Ravi Shankar and Phillip Glass. Sarah Sass will present a solo set to the music of John Cage that examines the relationship between a performer and his or her audience. Finally, Infused Soul by Marissa Guerrero is a quintet based on the theme of spirituality.

The Tour's performance at Ohio Wesleyan will be held on May 2 at 7 p.m. in the Chappelear Drama Center. Admission is one canned food item per person, which will be donated to People In Need, a local charity organization.
