OWU's Alumni Weekend Honors Distinguished Graduates

May 14, 2002

[ Wendie Malick Photo ] DELAWARE, OHIO -- The month of May signals the time for rekindling friendships in class reunions and festivities during the annual Alumni Weekend program, from May 17-19 on Ohio Wesleyan's campus. More than 1,000 OWU alumni who graduated in classes ending in "2" and "7" are expected to return to OWU for the weekend. Two gatherings of note are the Class of 1952, the Golden Key reunion class, and the Class of 1977, which will celebrate its 25th Silver Key reunion.

Highlighting the weekend events is the presentation of the Distinguished Achievement Citation Awards, this year being presented to respected Columbus (Ohio) lawyer and champion of civil rights, Alex Shumate '72, and actress and star of the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me, Wendie Malick '72. Receiving the award posthumously is Judson S. Sayre '20, businessman and developer of the automatic washer. Alumni awards for outstanding service to Ohio Wesleyan will be presented to Janice Kaye Fritz '57, Eleanor Seiller Tarbutton '39, Dorothy Seiller Baldwin '36 and Dale Bruce '52.

Alumni Weekend would not be complete, however, without the traditional Parade of Classes -- class year signs and all -- and procession to an all-alumni luncheon in the balloon-decorated Branch Rickey Arena.

Besides the numerous social aspects of the weekend, alumni can attend several thought-provoking alumni college programs, an early morning birdwalk in the Kraus Wilderness Preserve with OWU Professor and ornithologist Jed Burtt, a reception to celebrate 10 years since the development of the Monnett Garden on campus, and a performance by the alumni choir.
