Kresge Foundation Awards OWU $1 Million Grant for Science Center

April 16, 2003

[ Science Center Model ] DELAWARE, OHIO -- Ohio Wesleyan University received word that The Kresge Foundation will award a $1 million challenge grant for renovation of its $35-million state-of-the-art Science Center.

"Our new science facility is a long overdue answer to the need s of one of the strongest areas of Ohio Wesleyan's academic program," says OWU President Tom Courtice. "This challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation provides us with the momentum and impetus to move into the final phase of fundraising for the center."

With work taking place in phases, the first phase of the Science Center was opened to students at the beginning of spring semester. New and renovated classrooms and teaching laboratories, an expanded and integrated science library, an efficient and modern greenhouse and a glass enclosed multi-level atrium are just a few features of the new center, which will be completed in 2004.

"The explosive growth of science research in our society mandates that colleges and universities commit greater resources to science education," says Courtice. "The Kresge Foundation's recognition of this is reflected in its support of institutions like Ohio Wesleyan, that are preparing our students to be the science leaders of tomorrow."

To achieve the terms of the challenge grant, the entire balance of the capital goal for the center must be raised.

At the time of the grant announcements this month, the Foundation has awarded 38 grants in 2003, totaling $25,439,000. It will continue to make new grant commitments during the balance of the year. Grants are made toward projects involving construction or renovation of facilities and the purchase of major capital equipment or real estate. Institutions operating in the areas of higher education, health and long-term care, arts and humanities, human services, science and the environment, and public affairs typically are awarded grants of this nature.

The Kresge Foundation is an independent private foundation created by the personal gifts of Sebastian S. Kresge. It is not affiliated with any corporation or organization.
