OWU Opera Theater Brings 'Little Red Riding Hood,' 'Eve's Odds' to Stage

October 30, 2003

DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Ohio Wesleyan Department of Music presents the fall 2003 Opera Theater production of Eve's Odds and Little Red Riding Hood at 8 p.m on Nov. 7 and 8 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 9 in Sanborn Hall's Jemison Auditorium.

Eve's Odds, with music by Bruce Trinkley and libretto by J. Jason Charnesky, is the winner of the 1999 National Opera Association's Chamber Opera Competition. The work is the story of Adam and Eve -- with more than a few alternative plot turns encouraged by the scheming of Lilith, the Snake, and several ambitious angels.

Ohio Wesleyan student cast members include Rebecca Hinkle as Eve, Mohamed El Zein as Adam, Alex Smith as the Snake, Mary Alice Korth as Lilith, Jennifer Blystone as the Bad Angel, and Tiffany Treni as the Guardian Angel. Also featured in the Angel Chorus are Sara Idema, Sara Kovit, Qiana McNary, Katie Personke, Rosie Pignataro, and Vanessa Reid.

The accompanying ensembles include the OWU Women's Chorus and a chamber orchestra of OWU students and faculty. Composer Trinkley, a member of the Pennsylvania State University faculty, will be in residence at Ohio Wesleyan during the week of the production.

Little Red Riding Hood, with music and libretto by Seymour Barab, is the familiar tale featuring clever Little Red who uses her love of strawberries to match wits with the wolf. In addition to the regular productions, Delaware City elementary schools will be attending performances of Little Red Riding Hood as part of the Opera Theater's education outreach initiative. This initiative also includes classroom activities and pre- and post-production discussions with the director of the OWU Opera Theater program, Professor Jason Hiester, and the cast.

The OWU cast for Little Red Riding Hood includes Melissa Diggs and Alison Park as Little Red, Laura Saunders as the Mother/Grandmother, and Alex Smith as the Wolf/Woodsman.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, OWU staff, and children. For more information and to order tickets, call 740-368-3700 or e-mail musicd@owu.edu.
