Gloria Steinem to Visit OWU on Wednesday, Oct. 27

October 19, 2004

[ Gloria Steinem ] DELAWARE, OHIO -- Gloria Steinem, writer, editor, lecturer and feminist organizer is including Ohio Wesleyan University in her 1,500-mile trek via an RV through Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, that begins in her hometown of Toledo on October 25 and ends on Election Day.

Organized through People for the American Way Voters Alliance, Steinem's trips, including her OWU visit on Oct. 27 for a brown-bag lunch—noon to 2 p.m. in the Benes Room of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center—are taking her to organizations such as the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the Young Voter Alliance, but also could feature spontaneous trips to various shopping malls, laundromats, libraries and nail salons along the way.

Regarding her road trip, Steinem says, "I'm taking this action because I've lived through the election of every U.S. president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and the fundamental differences in world view between Bush and Kerry make this the most crucial election in my lifetime." She also has noted that women and young people are the majority of undecided voters because they feel less in control of their lives and are less likely to have access to information. They tend to make up their minds in the last week or days before the election, and by that time, the media has, as she notes, often devolved into "gotcha" journalism or even-handed negativism.

Steinem founded Ms. Magazine in 1972 and was the magazine's editor for 15 years. She is a freelance writer who has been published in Esquire, the New York Times Magazine and numerous other periodicals. Books she has authored include such best sellers as "Revolution from Within" A Book of Self Esteem," and "Norma Jean," a book about the life of actress Marilyn Monroe.

Helping to found the Women's Action Alliance and National Women's Political Caucus, Steinem was President and co-founder of Voters for Choice, a political action committee that joined with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

Steinem's visit to OWU is sponsored by the Peace and Justice House and Women's and the Gender Studies program. For more information, call OWU's Office of Public Relations at 740-368-3339.
