Ohio State Champion Presenting Chess Lecture at OWU

September 28, 2005

DELAWARE, OHIO -- Calvin Blocker, an International Master chess player, will present a lecture and take on challengers in a simultaneous exhibition at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Bishops Chess Club, with support from WCSA, will sponsor the event on Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. The event will be in the Bayley Room of the University's Beeghly Library (43 Rowland Ave.) and is free to Ohio Wesleyan students, faculty and staff. For non-Ohio Wesleyan attendees, general admission tickets are $10 or $5 for students (19-or-under).

"He is quite the character," says Tom Green, Bishops Chess Club advisor and associate director of libraries and head of public services for the University. "Many chess players are introverted, but Blocker is quite extroverted. He is a very dynamic presenter and the lecture will be interesting to anyone that enjoys chess."

Blocker is currently the co-Ohio State Champion and has won the Ohio State Championship more than a dozen times. He ranks as the nation's 99th best tournament chess player with a 2449 rating.

Simultaneous exhibitions are games where a single chess player takes on a large quantity of players at the same time.
