Former Four-Star Commander, General Zinni Discusses Future of the Middle East

January 14, 2005

[ General Anthony Zinni ] Delaware, Ohio -- Four-star General Anthony Zinni will deliver a speech entitled "American Grand Strategy and the Future of the Middle East" on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Hamilton-Williams Campus Center Benes Rooms. General Zinni will speak at Ohio Wesleyan University as part of the 2005 John Kennard Eddy Memorial Lecture on World Politics.

General Zinni is a former four-star commander of CENTCOM where he had responsibility as the CINC for the entire Middle East and Eurasian area and, more recently, special envoy of President Bush to the Middle East peace process. General Zinni will provide an insightful assessment of the decision to invade Iraq. He will go beyond Iraq drawing upon his role as the chief negotiator between Palestine and Israel.

General Zinni has devoted his life to service in the military, rising to hold the same rank as Dwight D. Eisenhower and Colin Powell. His military service has taken him to over 70 countries and has earned him numerous awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Defense Superior Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Purple Heart. "He was commander of one of the most important regions of national security and has given a consistent and credible analysis with regard to the invasion of Iraq," said Dr. Sean Kay, associate professor of politics and government at OWU. "If I put this speech in context of who's giving it and the current moment in time, this is one of, if not, the most important lectures that I have organized here at OWU."

Currently, General Zinni holds positions on several boards of directors and advisors of major U.S. companies and non-profit organizations. He is President of UCLA's Center for Middle East Development and a Distinguished Advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. General Zinni also has co-authored a book on his career with Tom Clancy entitled "Battle Ready," a New York Times Best Seller.

The John Kennard Eddy Memorial Lecture is a living memorial to a former student. John Kennard "Jeff" Eddy - along with Bill Kroener and Jay Riesz, two of his classmates and friends - was killed by a reckless driver on September 23, 1988. The Eddy family has chosen this very valuable and important method of keeping Jeff's memory alive across the generations of Ohio Wesleyan students. Past speakers of the Eddy Memorial Lecture series include General Wesley K. Clark and Dr. John J. Mearsheimer.
