OWU to Present Ohio premiere of Othello in Wonderland

September 28, 2005

DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Ohio Wesleyan University Department of Theatre & Dance will present the Ohio premiere of Othello in Wonderland on the main stage of the Chappelear Drama Center on Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. and a matinee performance on Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.

This compelling drama reveals the universal conflict of censorship by governments as a troupe of Iranian actors attempts to stage the Shakespearean play Othello with chilling and often humorous consequences. Othello in Wonderland is written by Gholam-Hossein Saedi, Iran's best-known playwright of this century. The play will be presented as part of OWU's 2005 Sagan National Colloquium topic, 'The United States and the Islamic World: Challenges and Prospects.'

The cast and crew include over 40 Ohio Wesleyan students and is directed by Elane Denny-Todd, theatre professor at OWU. Scenic design is by OWU senior Chris Andrus; lighting design by OWU theatre professor D. Glen Vanderbilt, Jr.; and costume design by Jacqueline Shelley. OWU senior Jesse Fromosky is stage manager for the production.
