May 15, 2006

DELAWARE, Ohio — Ohio Wesleyan University's Alumni Weekend 2006 was jump-started with a special proclamation from the city of Las Vegas.Ohio Wesleyan graduates Chuck '54 and Pat '56 McManis delivered a proclamation from Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman stating that today – May 19 – would be celebrated as Ohio Wesleyan Day in the city."This is a special honor," says Nancy Morgan Giles, OWU class of 1960 and President of the Alumni Association. "It is all about connections – the connection that Ohio Wesleyan has with Delaware and now its outpost west of the Mississippi River."

The connection between Delaware, Ohio Wesleyan and Las Vegas' government is bigger than some might think. Pat and Chuck have lived in Las Vegas for 35-years with Pat working for the city over the past 15 years. "When we were planning to come back, we thought it would be fun to make this happen," says Pat. Beyond Pat's connection, Mayor Goodman's son, Eric, is a 1995 Ohio Wesleyan graduate. David Riggleman, Las Vegas' public information officer, grew up in Delaware with his family.

The proclamation was presented to Tom Homan, Delaware's city manager, and Giles before a luncheon celebrating the class of 1956's 50th reunion from Ohio Wesleyan. In addition, the Golden Reunion class officially dedicated the plaza between University and Slocum Halls as part of the celebration.
