OWU Department of Theatre & Dance to Present "Noises Off"

March 20, 2006

DELAWARE, OHIO — The Ohio Wesleyan University Department of Theatre & Dance will bring the hilarious farce Noises Off to the Chappelear Drama Center's Main Stage April 5-9. Noises Off, written by the contemporary British playwright Michael Frayn, was first produced in London in 1983 and won the Evening Standard Award for the Best Comedy of the Year. Frayn has won a number of other awards for his works; including the Tony and the Olivier Award. The OWU performance is under the direction of D. Glen Vanderbilt Jr., professor and chairperson of the theatre & dance department at OWU. Chadwyn Knutson, OWU's technical director, designed the elaborate set, which turns around on stage. Costume shop manager and designer Jackie Shelley designed the costumes. Guest-artist Ryan Osborn, who is on the staff at Mershon Auditorium on the Ohio State University campus, designed the lighting. This is the first show he has designed for OWU. Melissa Nutting, on the faculty of the Otterbein College department of theatre & dance, is a guest-artist dialect coach. Noises Off takes the audience on a riotous journey as the characters in the play struggle to put on another play, Nothing On. The audience gets a fly-on-the-wall view of this company's failing production, on stage and off. Noises Off takes the audience behind the scene and gives the audience a look as the actors deal with their personal problems; falling in and out of love, envy, aging, and just falling — farcically! Professor Vanderbilt calls Noises Off "a big, broad, rip-roaring play." He explains that, "This is a British farce in the best sense of the old-tradition of doors opening, closing, wacky characters racing around frantically, and even falling down on occasion." Vanderbilt also says that, "The department has often considered doing it, but the timing did not feel 'right' until now. In Knutson's experienced hands the entire set will turn around between Act 1 and 2, where the action shifts to a 'behind the scenes' peek at the goings-on of the company, and then again, turns back to front for Act 3." It is not intended for young audiences. The production's cast includes: Kevin Barron, Barbara Eldredge, Diane Harvey, Blaire Hayden, Chelsea Killburn, Eric Magnus, Tavish Miller, Nathan Truman and Dan Whalen. The stage manager is Corey Hinshaw. Noises Off will run April 5-8 at 8 p.m. and April 9 at 2 p.m. in the Chappelear Drama Center on the Main Stage at the corner of Park Ave. and Washington St. on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware.
