The film, released in 1999, won 11 film awards, including the Audience Award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, and nominated for another four. The film is the story of a city businessman that returns to his village in North China for the funeral of his father. He finds his elderly mother insisting on the observation of all the traditional burial customs, despite the fact that times have changed, and that it involves many people carrying his father's body back to the village - the road home.
