A Message from Kathe Law Rhinesmith ’64, Chair, Ohio Wesleyan Board of Trustees

May 4, 2007

Dear OWU Campus Community and Friends,

Another academic year at Ohio Wesleyan is rapidly drawing to a close, creating an opportunity to reflect on significant developments in the life of our University while at the same time focusing on the future.

As President Mark Huddleston prepares to leave Ohio Wesleyan for his new presidency at the University of New Hampshire, the Board thanks him for his leadership during the past three years. Mark has planted some important seeds for growth and progress, and with our collective care and attention, we will realize more of the fruits of his work with us in the months and years to come.  We wish Mark, Emma, Giles, and Katherine the best of luck and success.

The University is moving forward with efforts to prioritize the many goals outlined in the long-term Institutional Agenda endorsed by the Strategic Planning Committee in March.  This Agenda provides a framework to ensure that we move successfully and strategically forward, and continues the momentum created by our planning efforts over the last two years. The Board of Trustees will be discussing the Agenda in detail at its June meeting.

Great strides already have been made in moving forward with our integrated marketing communications, development, and student success initiatives — products of our early planning work.  While there is much more to come on each of these fronts, I expect the same level of intensity and focus on positive outcomes will be evidenced with the development of other initiatives guided by the Institutional Agenda.

Be assured that the Board is working diligently to ensure that Ohio Wesleyan maintains its legacy of providing students from around the world with a liberal arts education of the highest caliber.  Ours is such a fine University that I am confident we will attract a dynamic and passionate leader to serve as our next president. As we move along in this transition phase, I will share news about our progress.

Finally, on behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate our graduating seniors.  We are proud of you and wish for you the many good things that an excellent education and personal desire for accomplishment will provide.  Our thanks go to the OWU faculty and staff members for your efforts to inspire our students to discover and nurture their intellectual passions.  You have equipped them with the tools they need to change our world for the better.

I look forward to seeing many of you during both Commencement and Alumni Weekend. I thank you for your continued support as the Board works to fulfill its mission to move Ohio Wesleyan forward.

Sincerely,

Kathe
