Ohio Wesleyan University Announces 2009-10 Arts Calendar of Events

DELAWARE, OH – Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its 2009-10 lineup of theatre, musical, and visual arts events. Unless otherwise noted, these events are free and open to the public.

Theatre & Dance

8 p.m. Oct. 2, 3, 9 and 10, and 2 p.m. Oct. 11 – “Night Watch” by Lucille Fletcher, at Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave. Tickets are $10 for general admission, and $5 for students and senior citizens. Call (740) 368-3855 for reservations.

Music

The theme for the 2009-10 academic year is “A Season of Celebration: Sanborn @ 100,” in recognition of the 100th birthday of Sanborn Hall, home of the OWU Department of Music. 8 p.m. Nov. 10 – OWU Music Department faculty/guests recital featuring Nancy Gamso, professor of music, performing on clarinet with WindWorks, in Jemison Auditorium in Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St.

3:15 p.m. Nov. 15 – OWU Music Department senior recital featuring Christopher Meadows performing on the Rexford Keller Memorial Organ, in Gray Chapel in University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St. The largest of six Klais organs in the United States, this four-manual tracker organ features 82 ranks, 55 stops, and 4,522 pipes.

8 p.m. Nov. 17 – OWU’s Park Avenue Jazz Ensemble, directed by Larry Griffin, professor of music, in Gray Chapel in University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St.

Performing Arts Series

The Performing Arts Series features an array of top-notch guest performers. Admission to each event is $20 for the general public, and $5 for senior citizens and non-Ohio Wesleyan students with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased at www.ticketweb.com or by calling (740) 368-3629.

7 p.m. Oct. 25 – “Archy & Mehitabel,” a solo production performed by actor, singer, dancer and clown Gale McNeeley, at Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave. McNeeley’s performance features original interpretations of newspaperman and humorist Don Marquis’ tales of a cynical cockroach (Archy, a poet in a previous life) and an irreverent alley cat (Mehitabel, Cleopatra in one of her prior lives) based in the early 1900s.

8 p.m. Jan. 16 – “The String Machine,” a performance by the Columbus Dance Theatre featuring Tim Veach, artistic director, at Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave.

8 p.m. Jan. 31 – Cecile Licad, internationally known pianist, in Gray Chapel in University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St. Licad’s recent U.S. highlights include performances with Seattle Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, Tucson Symphony, and at the La Jolla Chamber Music and Eastern Music festivals.

8 p.m. Feb. 27 – Chanticleer, an orchestra of male voices, in Gray Chapel in University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St. The Grammy Award-winning ensemble, the only full-time classical vocal ensemble in the United States, has been entertaining audiences for more than 20 years.

Ross Art Museum

Ohio Wesleyan’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., is closed during the summer. The museum reopens Aug. 20, and will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and Saturdays. Aug. 20-Sept. 20 – “Marking Time,” paintings and drawings by Douglas Goering, along with prints, drawings, and photographs from the museum’s permanent collection. Goering’s work represents 45 years of art-making, including richly colored abstract paintings that address aspects of visual perception.

Sept. 30-Nov. 15 – Paintings, drawings, and painted objects by OWU Distinguished Alumni Artist Marilyn Meek Webster, Class of 1963, along with ceramic pieces by various artists.

Dec. 3-Jan. 31, 2010 – Multimedia works by OWU Department of Fine Arts faculty. Please note: The museum will be closed during the university’s holiday break from Dec. 18-Jan. 11.

Feb. 11-April 4, 2010 – Multimedia works in a juried show featuring art students from The Five Colleges of Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, and The College of Wooster.

April 17-May 9, 2010 – Multimedia works in a juried show by OWU’s graduating fine arts majors.

May 14-July 4, 2010 – “Quilt Surface Design Show,” featuring art quilts by local and national artists.

Gallery 2001

Ohio Wesleyan’s Gallery 2001 is located in the lobby of Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave. During the summer, the library and gallery are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Starting Aug. 16, both will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday. The art gallery was a gift to the university from the Class of 2001.

Through Aug. 10 – “Quilt Surface Design Symposium Invitational,” featuring the work of 17 quilters from the United States and Canada.

Aug. 16-Sept. 17 – “Decked Out,” an exhibit of painted skateboard decks by Columbus, Ohio, artist Cyrus Fire.

The OWU Alumni Gallery

The OWU Alumni Gallery graces the first- and second-floor center stairwell of Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., and features the artistic creations of university graduates. Summer hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Starting Aug. 24, the gallery will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Through Aug. 25 – “Crossing Boundaries,” by Gale Wallar, Class of 1971, featuring drawings and paintings representing Wallar’s time in Europe and Asia.
