Ohio Wesleyan University Announces December Public Events

DELAWARE, OH – Ohio Wesleyan University today announced its December lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open to the public. For the latest OWU event information, including schedule changes, visit events.owu.edu.
Ohio Wesleyan appreciates your interest in attending our sporting events, lectures, and exhibits, and hopes you will visit campus often. However, we ask that you not attend public events if you are running a fever or exhibiting other flu-like symptoms.
Dec. 1-Jan. 26 – “Rare Moments” exhibit by Barbara Frentsos Butler, Class of 1947, featuring abstract paintings on display in both the Alumni Gallery in Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., and Gallery 2001 in Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Holiday schedule: The Alumni Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, but will be closed Dec. 2-Jan. 3. Gallery 2001 is open during library hours Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. The library will be closed Dec. 24-Jan. 3, and Jan. 9-10. During the week of Jan. 4-8, the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. only. Normal library hours will resume Jan. 11.
8 p.m. Dec. 1 – OWU Music Department faculty recital featuring the Carpe Diem String Quartet, including faculty member Korine Fujiwara, in Jemison Auditorium in Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St., Delaware.
7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 – OWU Men’s Basketball against The College of Wooster in Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. This event will be viewable live online and archived afterward at StreamOWU.
Dec. 3-Feb. 1 – “ON AND OFF THE WALL” exhibit featuring two- and three-dimensional artworks by members of the OWU Department of Fine Arts faculty,” in the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Holiday schedule: The museum will be closed Dec. 16-Jan. 11.
4 p.m. Dec. 3 – Opening reception for “ON AND OFF THE WALL” faculty exhibit in the Richard M. Ross Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Note: The Richard M. Ross Museum will be closed for the holidays from Dec. 18, 2009 - Jan. 18, 2010.
4:10 p.m. Dec. 3 – OWU Science Lecture Series: “Where do Rhythms Come From? Studying Pattern Generation with Frog Calls” by Heather Rhodes, assistant professor of neurophysiology at Denison University, in Room 163 of Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St., Delaware.
6 p.m.-8 p.m. Dec. 3 – The Hunger Banquet, to raise awareness about hunger at the local, national, and global levels, and featuring remarks by Sean Kay, Ph.D., director of the OWU International Studies Program. Admission is $3, or three packaged, non-perishable food items. Tickets are available at the door. Attendees will participate in a drawing to determine their class status for the event: Those with upper-class status will receive a full meal with table seating; middle-class status will receive rice and beans with table seating; lower-class status will receive rice and floor seating. This event, sponsored by the student group ProgressOWU, will be held in the Benes Rooms of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware.
8 p.m. Dec. 4, 11 and 18– Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Advance tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children and senior citizens. Call (740) 363-1257 for reservations. Holiday schedule: The observatory will be closed Dec. 19-Jan. 8.
8 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5 – Directing Class and Playwriting Class present One-Act Plays, in the Studio Theatre of Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware.
2-4 p.m. Dec. 6 -- Opening reception for “Rare Moments” exhibit of paintings by Delaware native Barbara Frentsos Butler, Class of 1947, in the Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., Delaware.
3:15 p.m. Dec. 6 – OWU Choral Art Society concert, directed by Jason Hiester, assistant professor of music, in Gray Chapel in University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.
5:30 p.m. Dec. 6 – OWU hosts the lighting of the Ron Hudler Memorial Christmas Tree at 5:30 p.m. on the lawn near the South Sandusky Street-Park Avenue intersection, just north of the Edwards Gym parking lot. The community-wide event will include caroling, a bonfire, and refreshments.
6 p.m. Dec. 9 – OWU Women’s Basketball against Washington & Jefferson College in Branch Rickey Area, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. This event will be viewable live online and archived afterward at StreamOWU.
8 p.m. Dec. 9 – OWU Men’s Basketball against Capital University in Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. This event will be viewable live online and archived afterward at StreamOWU.
8 p.m. Dec. 10 – “New Vistas in Astronomy” lecture: “How the Telescope Changed Astronomy,” by Barbara Ryden of The Ohio State University. This lecture will be held at Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware, and is geared toward adults. Tickets are $6. For reservations, call (740) 363-1257.
2 p.m. Dec. 12 – OWU Women’s Basketball against Earlham College in Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. This event will be viewable live online and archived afterward at StreamOWU.
7 p.m. Dec. 18 – OWU Women’s Basketball against Bethany College in Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.
6 & 8 p.m. Dec. 29 – OWU BISHOP CLASSIC/HOOPS FOR HOPE, to raise funds for breast cancer awareness education and research. Monetary contributions accepted, with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a division of the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Both games will be played in Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.
1 & 3 p.m. Dec. 30 – OWU BISHOP CLASSIC/HOOPS FOR HOPE, in Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Consolation game at 1 p.m. and championship game at 3 p.m. Monetary contributions accepted for breast cancer awareness education and research.
