Ohio Wesleyan and Columbus State Collaborate to Serve Area Students

June 14, 2011

DELAWARE, OH – Ohio Wesleyan University and Columbus State Community College are collaborating to assist Columbus State students who wish to transfer to the four-year university to earn their bachelor’s degrees.

Four students at Columbus State have enrolled at Ohio Wesleyan in the first-time joint transfer initiative. They will start at Ohio Wesleyan in the fall after graduating from Columbus State this spring and summer.

The collaboration forms a bond between the two schools that traditionally serve different constituencies. Ohio Wesleyan is a private, nationally recognized liberal arts institution with 1,850 students. Columbus State is a large, open-enrollment state community college with more than 30,000 students.

The decision to work together comes as a growing number of institutions are looking at transfer programs as a way to better serve students while also identifying qualified applicants. Leaders from Columbus State and Ohio Wesleyan will work together over the next few months to solidify details of the collaboration.

“This is a great initiative for these students, for Columbus State, for Ohio Wesleyan, and for Central Ohio,” said David Harrison, Ph.D., Columbus State president. “These are outstanding students and impressive individuals who will really benefit from attending one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. And our graduates will enrich Ohio Wesleyan by bringing their diverse backgrounds and experiences to the student body.”

Ohio Wesleyan President Rock Jones, Ph.D., said the university looks forward to welcoming the Columbus State transfer students to the OWU campus and to continuing to collaborate with college officials.

“Ohio Wesleyan brings together students from around the world, creating a rich, diverse educational experience,” Jones said. “We welcome these students to our family and look forward to the contributions we know they will make. We also appreciate our relationship with Columbus State as we collaborate to enhance educational opportunities for the Central Ohio community and beyond.”
